Video demo of Absurd Area, LL2 world in progress

http://wombat.platymuus.com/ytembed/?code=M7pB19x-_zY

Hi! I've been working on an LL2 world recently. I'm trying to make a world that is fun, challenging, and has some unique things you've never seen in LL2 before, such as:
* A flexible upgrade system - instead of getting Skills and Talents in specific places, you get Upgrade Points which you use to select an upgrade from a list. Create your own progression!
* You know how you can't place much equipment in the editor; the best you can do is tag a regular axe/parka/amulet? Well, I cheated. My world will have you finding all sorts of stuff lying around, some of it magic. And even one secret already-sharpened axe so you can get to some areas extra early...
* You can change the early bits of the game with modifiers! If you choose the Knight modifier, your starting axe does 4 damage and your amulet gives you 0 magic. Gangsta makes your parka have 3 defense and your axe 0 speed. Literacy gives you +35% spell damage but your parka has 0 stamina. These can be combined too, but they don't work if Heir is on. Toy makes all your equipment terrible, and it DOES work with Heir - so if you really WANT to, you can start with terrible Golden equipment!
* Bunches of secrets! Several secret areas with plenty of loot and Objective Points. Some quest givers are cleverly hidden.

Anyway, I've put an explanation of the Class system in a spoiler since it's long.
There are 30 upgrades in 6 different categories. Each upgrade gives you a couple Skills or Talents.

CIVILIAN - These upgrades give you no real combat or magic abilities, but boost you in other ways. Don't overlook them! With one exception, you can get any of these at any time.
Explorer - Mobility, Scavenger, Survival, Tracking
Merchant - Haggling, Miser, Packrat, Luck
Craftsman - Alchemy, Junksmith, Clockwork, Training
Expert (Requires Craftsman) - Herbalism, Mining, Mixology, Toughness
Scholar - Meditation, Mental Focus, Energy

SOLDIER - Three different combat classes. For each class, you must get the upgrades in order, but you are not restricted to one class - mix as much as you like.
DUELIST - Skills and Talents that focus on taking down powerful foes.
1 - Chopping, Stun, Bash
2 - Critical, Strength
3 - Criticism, Defense
4 - Poison, Parry
5 - Arsenic, Axe Trap
GLADIATOR - Skills and Talents that focus on taking on hordes of enemies at a time.
1 - Sneak Attack, Axe Mastery, Vampirism
2 - Endurance, Persuasion
3 - Stoneskin, Stomp
4 - Whirl, Air Strike
5 - Knockout, Flame
RANGER - Skills and Talents for ranged combat.
1 - Tossing, Throwing, Static
2 - Shatter, Dodge
3 - Vivacity, Piercing
4 - Ricochet, Triple
5 - Finesse, Homing

MAGE - Two different categories, Enchantment (useful magic) and Sorcery (destructive magic). Each has 5 levels. Purchasing a Mage upgrade allows you access to BOTH the Enchantment and Sorcery upgrades of the next higher level.
1
Enchantment - Green Thumb, Lifeberries, Ignite
Sorcery - Freezing, Cryozoid, Drain
2
Enchantment - Green Thumb, Brambles, Restoration
Sorcery - Scorching, Toasties, Gale
3
Enchantment - Green Thumb, Shroom, Cold Wave
Sorcery - Spookiness, Bonehead, Bone Bomb
4
Enchantment - Windbag, Berserk, Heat Shield
Sorcery - Electrocution, Shock Orb, Stone Spike
5
Enchantment - Windbag, Tornado, Plague
Sorcery - Combustion, Burninate, Ice Cube

Feel free to leave comments and suggestions. I will update more when I have more content to brag about. I hope you enjoy the finished product!

Incidentally, if people want to playtest what I've done so far, that could probably be arranged. :)

Is there gonna be a higher level cap?

Nah, that's not possible to do with the technology I'm using. The "cheating" I'm doing to mess around with your equipment and other things is based on using specials that refer to variables outside the normal 0-900 range, which allows you to mess with information about your character - but the level 50 cap is hardcoded into loonyland.exe. You could do a thing where if you get to level 50, you could activate something maybe a couple times per game to set your level and XP back to level 45 or something, allowing you to get those levels over again for 25 extra Skill Points. But I don't want to do that in this world. You could also make a patch that hacks the .exe, but that would mean the world would work differently for people who don't install the patch - and I REALLY don't want that. (I am hacking the .exe, but ONLY to change dialogue and quest descriptions and such.)

I AM making clever use of variables to make there be a total of 119 presents when I finally finish the thing, so Skillbor fans take heart. ;-)

I've spent the last couple days creating another area: the Polar Pond. Screenshots in spoiler:

It's an icy maze. You can try to navigate the confusing platforms to find a few presents and some loot; or you could come back when you get the Ice Skates. Your choice. But if you get it early, you may find a pretty nice piece of equipment...
Oh, and I forgot to mention: See those Tinny Tims on the little islands? Although all monsters can usually walk all over ice, I made it so these guys are restricted to their little islands. (They aren't randomly generated, but are summoned by specials; the border of each island is tagged 255 which means monsters can't walk on it, so they're trapped.) Just a little touch I'm proud of. ^___^

HEY! WANNA TEST IT?
I'm letting y'all in on a pre-release so you can check out the features. Try out some character progressions, and such.
Step 1: Download this zip file.
Step 2: Extract it to the folder containing your Loonyland 2: Collector's Edition installation.
Step 3: Follow the instructions in AbsurdAreaREADME.txt to create a version of loonyland.exe that has modified dialogue and quest descriptions.
Step 4: Have fun!

Contains:
- Get up to 7 upgrade points for a total of 8 upgrades; choose them from the class system to create your own character. The final version will have 29 upgrade points to earn so you can get all 30 upgrades!
- Battle enemies in 6 areas (not counting safe areas!), including 2 secret areas. The final version will be as large as Winter Woods, and will feature a dozen secret areas!
- Collect the first 21 presents. The final version will have 119.
- Try out the special bonus features of the Knight, Gangsta, Literacy, and Toy modifiers!

Hope you enjoy. Leave feedback!

I am having trouble downloading the file...

Frogdude 07-23-2013 06:40 PM

Re: Video demo of Absurd Area, LL2 world in progress

Can you describe the trouble? I just tested it by visiting the link, clicking the "Download This File" button, entering in a code, and clicking Download Now. It took a few seconds after that for the download to start. Anyone else got it to work?

Megadog 07-23-2013 06:40 PM

Re: Video demo of Absurd Area, LL2 world in progress

I can't access the page...

Appears to work now, don't worry.

Re: Video demo of Absurd Area, LL2 world in progress

I hope the instructions for patching the .exe were clear enough. By the way, if anyone accidentally patches over their original loonyland.exe, I can upload an "undo" patch file. Probably should have anyway, hehe.

Re: Video demo of Absurd Area, LL2 world in progress

Just finished another area, the Perilous Pass. Found to the north of the Frigid Forest, it connects the area around Einsburg to the rest of the world.

A narrow cleft filled with nasty plants... and from the cliffs, even nastier plants bombard you from above. Probably best to just keep running until you're a higher level!

Bah, turns out the zip was corrupt, and now I can't access the site again. Any chance we could get a mirror download?

Re: Video demo of Absurd Area, LL2 world in progress

Sure! I just realized why bother looking for third-party filehosting when I have Google Drive, y'know?
Link is here (and I updated the link in the post above).
There's slightly more content; the Perilous Pass has been completed, and now leads to a very, very bare-bones Treacherous Taiga which will lead to the rest of the game world.

Re: Video demo of Absurd Area, LL2 world in progress

Made it to the Taiga, and to both of the "The area hasn't been made" parts. So far this is probably one of the best add-ons I've ever played. It's awesome.

Re: Video demo of Absurd Area, LL2 world in progress

Glad you liked it! Any comments on the class system? (I've been tweaking it as I go, deciding that some skills need to be higher or lower tier; any feedback is great.)

I'll try to put in good bit of work today - the taiga shouldn't take TOO much work since it's mostly barren... but I do plan on having certain special things in it!

Re: Video demo of Absurd Area, LL2 world in progress

I did like what a saw, but I pushed most of my skills into magic in an attempt to reach berserk, which I didn't end up getting (I'll assume it's last tier). That skill would be useful considering how big the maps are.

Also, minor thing, but I wish you could go back into the starting hut, even if there is nothing there...
