Default The Great Flood of '08

Here in my home town of Cedar Rapids, Iowa, we've been getting loads of rain. Does anybody here remember (or at least heard about) the great flood of '93? Well, in the Cedar River, at least, the water level is way higher than back in '93. At least five feet higher. Actually, this year is an all-time record! Bridges are completely submerged, and a railroad bridge has been washed away. The interstate that crosses over the river has been closed, so everybody is stranded on their side of the river. Yeah, loads of fun!

Heh.... reminds me of what happened her in Indiana a week ago...... we couldn't go anywhere because the road leading away from our house was flooded over, and a small, eh, maybe 10 foot lake became a river. They actually declared our county in a state of emergency. Fortunately, our subdivision is on high ground.

Actually, as far as I know, only one person has died (at least from Cedar Rapids). I believe it was somebody who refused to leave her home even when she was ordered to do so. Anyway, things are really interesting over here. Did I say that the water was at least five feet higher than back in '93? Yesterday it crested at almost 12 feet higher than the flood of '93! Our city's water supply is running pretty low. We've been asked to limit our water consumption to drinking water only. So no showers, no dishes, no laundry. Fun! But some friends who live in a nearby town with plenty of water invited us to come and use their showers and laundry machine. So now I don't stink like crazy. I'm happy. Just in time for church, too!

Whoa. Way worse than what happened up here in Indy. I think we only had 2-4 deaths.

yea, I crested at 33 feet, and flood stage is 12. Do the math and it's 21 feet above normal flooding. All of down-town is right next to the river too, so it all got destructed. My house has leaking problems so we have a sump-pump. When the electricity went out, we had to have a bail the water out by hand.

No, I'm pretty sure it crested at 31 feet, not 33. But still, that's way too deep! The river was literally over a mile wide.
