... No seriously, it's bad. It's not designed for the consumer, but for the producer. DRM is very, very annoying as it is.

Oh...I was hoping there would be something in the way of a Dell service tag or something. You sure it doesn't show anything under Computer Management?

Yes. Every part of the computer was purchased separately besides the motherboard and CPU.

I thought Vista needed something like 2GB of RAM to run properly.

Well, it starts up and shuts down properly and does not lag. Actually, it REALLY lags when I play Oblivion for obvious reasons, but I'm baffled as to how it lags when I play Civilization 4. Maybe there's anti-aliasing I don't know about.

Your Civ 4 lag is probably due to not having RAM, as that would certainly cause an application to pause frequently as ram is swapped out with your swapfile.

Try Panda Security, its really easy.

Yeah, it's probably the RAM. Civ 4 is a really complex game. It's surprisingly addictive too. I feel kind of ashamed for going to war with Gandhi.

I donít want to sound abusive here, but I think the problems you are experiencing are simply due to your computer being too puny. Any computer used regularly to go on the Internet is constantly picking up new updates and little spyware bits and pieces and especially updates to the bloated operating system. In my opinion Microsoft has a deliberate policy to systematically keep filling up our computers with garbage (especially "security updates") so as to force you to keep upgrading their hardware. Their motive? They donít want to have to keep ensuring that their software runs on a wide range and age of hardware; they want everyone to keep buying new machines and stay up to date. I have run into the same kinds of problems described a couple of times with older computers. My current computer is still an XP machine, but it was close to top of the line two years ago and is still respectable. But I know Iím going to have to buy a new box in a year or two. It seems pathetic to have to do this just for internet use, but what are you going to do?

As far as running CIV IV on such a wee machine, my advice is fugedaboutid. Even my mighty box struggles sometimes with CIV.

If you want to keep using such a puny machine, my advice would be to disconnect it from the internet. I have a machine I only use for games and very rarely connect to the internet with it, and it keeps running fine. But I know that as soon as I reconnect to the Internet, BZAPP! lots of updates will arrive and it will probably end up being too slow.

Alternatively, if you want internet access but have a computer that cannot withstand the torment of Microsoft: Use Linux or HURD or Solaris or Mac OS X or <insert huge list here>
