Default Re: Help me find a laptop that's right for me

News! Turns out that one of my classmates has almost the same, if not THE same laptop that I want to get. I asked him if he likes it, and he said that it doesn't regulate heat very well, which can lead to overheating. I didn't get to ask in any more detail though, like what's the max it could take before it overheats, because he was talking to someone else, and in truth, we don't talk much. So, I'm asking for Julian's opinion on whether his comp has ever overheated, and such. Though, I am still probably gonna get it since
  1. It has the best value.
  2. It looks great.
  3. It will probably be able to do all that I want it to do.
  4. It can't possibly be as bad as my comp now, or my friend's comp, which smartly has the vent on the side of the comp turned to be facing diagonally downwards, which makes his comp feel hotter than mine!

Laptops are prone to overheating - what you need is to get a can of compressed air and blow out the dust in the vents every so often. If the keyboard starts to get *hot* to the touch you know you need to do that. Warm to the touch is probably a good warning sign too, though.

I had a laptop with a powerful video card, and I had a cooler thingie that it sat on (a plastic thing that plugs into a USB port and has twin fans inside, sucking air from the laptop and spitting it out the back), which also tilted it up a bit for better comfort. Without that thing it felt very hot, so I would recommend the extra $20 or so to get one of those.

I actually already have exactly what you described.... I use it, but I don't think its very effective, my comp still overheats, even with it on, and everything.

Well, the laptop you have right now is broken, right? So nothing will really help except replacing the sensor.

Yeah, its broken, but the cooler is supposed to help, I'm wondering if its helping at all, and also if it works better on non-broken comps.

Well, on my laptop it was being combined with an actual working internal fan, that's sort of the key difference...

Also note that generally the smaller it is the worst it is, as there's not as much space.
Toshiba laptops are pretty good at running games.

Now for my opinion.

For a good gaming laptop, Toshiba is your best bet. They've got the good chipsets for running mid-range to high games. For adequate laptops, go with HP. Their graphics aren't as good (unfortunately, neither is their hardware), but they can run games like Half-Life 2 on the recommended settings at about 13 FPS minimum(playable, but bad). Under No Circumstances should you buy Alienware, Dell, or Acer laptops. Not only are they crappy (I speak from experience), they have zero potential.

TL;DR

Toshiba good. HP ok. Dell & Acer bad.

But you already knew that.

I have a toshiba laptop and have never had said problem, however i wouldn't recommend a toshiba, because just recently my disk drive seems to have ex-kaploded and (well at least my laptop) doesn't have a graphic card, just a chip-set. (ie, can't play any recent games).
