I understand also that with a site that popular, it's probably very hard to sort through what is legal and illegal, but sites like Youtube have done an incredible job at innovating and finding ways to stop people from using its service for illegal material, and I don't see why Megaupload wouldn't have the money to do the same.
It should be noted that YouTube and the like are often more draconian than the law strictly requires. There are many YouTube videos that have been taken down despite using material in ways covered under the free use clause, for instance.

new information has filtered through now. The Owners of MegaUpload made Pirated copys of Copyrighted material for personal gain. Not sure exactly what they did, but it sounds like selling pirated CDs and the like.

The owner of MegaUpload, Kim Dotcom (thats right, he changed his last name to Dotcom) owned a huge multimillion dollar mansion in Auckland. The news people say it contained a swimming pool filled with IMPORTED SPRING WATER, a $12,000 custom made LADDER, a library in which pulling the correct book would open a SECRET PASSAGE, and several million dollar cars and helicopters. he also was roumered to have spent 12 million on a weekend party.

Now not only Megaupload was shut down, filesonic's sharing function is entirely removed, too. Which means all you can do now is backup your files and download them when needed... that's stupid. :V
