Default What other site forums/ online communities would you recommend?

So if my understanding is correct, people like Yourter and others want to be able to frequent some place that is "alive and happenin'". I hate to be a debbie-downer, but I really don't see "alive and happenin'" happening here again anytime soon, because many of us WERE drawn by Jamul's epic games, not his Flash ones, and simply don't get as enthusiastic about his Flash games. (HappyPonyGate got us really pumped; I really looked forward to those Journal posts) There's no reason to deny that, nor the idea that we simply can't find much else to be enthusiastic about here. (Obviously not all of us feel this way. I'm speaking for me and at least a few others)

So I thought I might try to be proactive and ask you all to recommend other online forums, communities, etc. that he and others may enjoy like some of us enjoyed Hamumu in the past. (Of course, be careful what you link to)

I can personally say that the forum on GOG.com is often a decent place to visit. Sure, there's some foul language and some threads pop up I CAN'T recommend and sometimes the "aged" forum members can be crotchety towards the newbies (don't create a whole bunch of posts asking for GOG to release a specific game; there's now a wishlist place for that). BUT there are rules too (no racism, no porn, etc.), overall people are generally decent, new posts happen every minute, there are tons (well, 370+) of classic games (and even a few new ones, now that the site has been redesigned) to browse and read about. Every Tues. and Thurs. GOG add new (old or new, usually old) games to their catalog. Etc., etc.

If you're looking for more "mature" topics (like politics, science, etc.) as well as lols (funny, pics, etc.), Reddit has various sub-forums (called "r"s, as in r/politics, r/gaming, r/pics, etc.) dedicated to those topics. I occasionally visit politics (not too much, because at times it seems the militant atheism from r/atheism is seething through, and trying to keep the discussion of intelligent design out of the classroom is not my fight), but r/gaming is what I really enjoy: it's quite goofy and funny at times. Sometimes there's some mature content (and, admittedly, quite a lot of language), but the humor that often comes up there makes up for it. Now, I wouldn't say this site isn't meant to act as a super-strong commuinty - threads come and go much more quickly than on a forum - but if you find like-minded individuals or enjoy debating or just looking for lols, this might be an option. Plenty of variety among the "r"s.

I don't visit the Escapist forums regularly, and only use that site to watch Zero Punctuation, but you might find a half-decent community there. Another option to consider.

So here's hoping you guys can come up with some examples, too, and not just bash me for even bringing up this topic. :P You can try to change Hamumu or find something to be excited about here (just a few weeks ago I made that Kickstarter thread, and was kinda pumped about it), if you enjoy more than Jamul's classic games. But I don't see him making any of those again anytime soon, so if that was the particular draw (being involved in the creation and playing those of the action-RPG genre), you should be allowed to have other options as an outlet for your gaming enthusiasm.

Reddit is eh. Between the creeps and the creep-watchers and creep-watcher-watchs and anti-creeps and religous fights and oh [insert choice of deity here] why would you need to consider that whywhywhy it's not about freedom of speech, there's some good stuff. But that's a pretty small inbetween.

Escapist I'd reccomend. However, they're currently in the middle of the crazy Mass Effect 3 baklash feedback loop, so you might want to wait until that calms down.

Other forums I visit are much more specific so I won't mention them. Also because they're less active.

Lol, really sure what you mean, but thanks. Then again, as I mentioned I don't go much outside r/gaming.

EDIT: Confusion cleared.

Good to know.

Fair enough, if you really think they don't apply.

I don't recommend Reddit. I used to use it but I've grown out of it and in hindsight the community is highly problematic even though that's not immediately apparent.

To begin with, a huge chunk of Reddit is composed of militant atheists, lgbt activists, social democrats, libertarian capitalists and anarchists who have read nothing about anarchy, all of whom will not hesitate to waste their entire day attacking people who do not meet them on the political spectrum, be that by leaning more towards the left or the right. I've seen people attacked simply for being Christians or Muslims and I've had many arguments by people who think "lol marxism is dead u stupid moron" is a valid argument. In addition to that there's the occasional person who will reply to you with a link to mature content without any warning, and if your mother is in the room that's a recipe for disaster.

Redditors have an incredibly high idea of themselves and their group and they are incredibly narcissistic and puritanical. Make a spelling or grammatical mistake in your post and Redditors will be happy to correct it for you in a condescending manner.

Reddit also has many ridiculously obnoxious communities. There's one that's basically the equivalent of feminism but for men, members of which always complain about men's oppression by the matriarchic system. To counter that, there's an even more ridiculous community, full of politically correct feminists who feel morally superior to everybody else and who gather links to posts they find misogynistic/racist/anti-lgbt/anti-minority/anti-affirmative action/politically incorrect, and then they flock to the posts, massively downvote them and spam them with stupid replies. They have a severe lack of sense of humor and believe in censorship of politically incorrect views.

Talking about censorship, most of Reddit has another ridiculous view, that every kind of information exchange is an exercise of free speech. Thus, when a subreddit that was dedicated to borderline child pornography was shut down, a ridiculous amount of people started whining about the evil nazi admins who dared censor that poor community. Reddit also has its fair share of pro-pedophile activists who believe our society is unfairly discriminating against them, and that prejudice against pedophiles is not only comparable, but equivalent to prejudice against blacks/women/homosexuals.

There's many more problems with Reddit but I won't explore them now because they are much more inappropriate.

Anyway, the question of the thread is what other sites I'd recommend. One of the sites I visit the most lately is the Marxists Internet Archive, which has the goal of collecting and publishing the works of countless Leftists. On the library page you will find a very extensive list of authors, from Anarchists to Trotskyists to Feminists. If you are new to communism you should check out their Beginners guide which should give you a very good idea of what communism is. Then you can start reading Lenin's works. Because we are talking about 45 volumes, reading everything is unrealistic, but no worries! There is also a Selected Works page for your convenience. After that you should check out Trotsky's works, of which a huge part is dedicated to fighting Stalinism. That information should be relevant to every communist's interests, as many of the communist parties of the world are stalinist and you are inevitably going to have to either face them and expose them, or let them keep sabotaging the class struggle. I especially recommend "On the Suppressed Testament of Lenin"

I find IRC is a wonderful place if you can find channels with topics of interest and people.

And I'm not going to use this as a chance to advertise my IRC server with 3 opers and 0 users...

Reddit is where untalented people make their rage comics in attempt to be funny.

SPUF is where you can go to talk about Team Fortress 2. Best game ever.

Escapist is a place I have no idea about.

Do not go to 4chan, by the way. It's bad.

Well, while I don't recommend it, I suppose I should allude The Dink Network, which is the Robinson Technologies forum for the game Dink Smallwood. As to why, I found Hamumu through an add for SWC on his site (only later did I find Mike was retuning the favour (sort of) with Dungeon Scroll Gold.

However, this is my only real forum. I don't stick with any others for very long, mostly because I feel no connection to those on other forums. You guys have become friends, and it's made sticking around worthwhile.

Thumbs down none

This forum is good because people actually read and care about what you respond with, instead of there being 9000 posts in every thread. I can't recommend anything, really, unless if you like Lego. :U

I think you have a misunderstanding of Reddit. The entire point is that user on Reddit can create or join any board he/she pleases and discuss those subjects with others interested. For example, because I had the interest to do so, I unsubscribed to all the default Reddit boards I don't like and instead put myself on a myriad of them related to politics, science and other such fields. What is allows me to do is to find out about new interesting findings and stay up to date with politics both domestically and internationally with just one website. However if somebody else wants to use Reddit to be able to find a ton of advice animals and jokes at the click of a button, they are free to do so.

If you're interested in Reddit, I suggest you go to it and lookup and the boards that exist for the fields you're interested in and judge the quality of it and whether or not you want to use it then.

Bungie forums, erryday.

The group I'm in is chill, friendly, and (mostly) sfw, but we've got guns, swords, and a mite of profanity, so I wouldn't suggest it for babies.
