Default Which Linux System Would You Recommend?

There are so many Linux systems out in the world. I'm not sure what to choose. I've looked up several sites and they just all write such long-winded reviews. I just like summaries.

In general, if you don't know what distro to use (or if you don't know what the word "distro" means), go with Ubuntu. It's desgned for the average user. Linux Mint is a good option too if you have the Unity interface in GNOME 3.

Maybe something more advanced and lightweight. I really hate Ubuntu because it's really hardware intensive! It's like the windows-alternative to Linux. Linux Mint is the almost the same. What I'm looking for is a system that is lightweight, is completely smooth when running on old hardware (that's where Ubuntu and Mint fail), and of course can run all my favourite Hamumu games with wine. I at first was thinking of Tails linux. But that system was only meant for the internet. Maybe I'll try something as completely radical as Arch Linux.

But other suggestions are welcome too!

I think knowing specs/what you intend to do with it would VASTLY help. Are you concerned about memory? How much? Internet or word processing or something else? Puppy Linux and DSL are both things. Up to this point I was going to recommend Mint. They might not be super lightweight but one of the big reasons people switch is not intensivity (yes, that's a word now), but because Mac soft/hardware is essentially paying for free things, and Windows is not written well/tons of bugs/bad internet architecture/virus problems/other reasons.

If the endgoal is lightweight, I recommend DSL. I'm thinking about running a minecraft server on a comp with 768MB of RAM w/ that OS. Twould be an accomplishment to be sure. (Having no income kinda sucks. Another option for me was to buy a Raspberry Pi and put it on there, with specially built OS and all)
