Yeah, can't really trust those diary applications.

A diary is a diary, there is nothing halfway about it. So the unsuspecting person downloads a diary app, he/she installs it and starts writing in their thoughts, about their family, life, et cetera, and also secrets.

But suddenly, the person receives an email asking for $200 from the person or else their secrets get released!

DUN DUN DUN!!

That is a possible scenario which could happen to anyone. That's why I don't recommend to anyone to write their private thoughts in an App.

Four checks on apps (diary apps or otherwise), being evil.

1. First and least valuable is ratings. Any app that does something this evil is going to have crappy rating assuming it isn't a third party downloaded app. (and if you feel the need to download a diary app from a third party you are probably doing it wrong) It should be noted that ratings whether it is as an official download or not can conceivably be faked, but I felt it was still worth mentioning.
2. Permissions. When you install an app on an android device it lists every possible permission that an app wants access to. If something seems out of place, don't give it those permissions. (I actually prefer Apple's permission management because it asks for permissions as the time takes place that they are needed which means apps can still function, even without the more scary qualities)
3. The way official app stores function: assuming you aren't downloading this app from a third party the app is probably "safe". (depending on your definition of the word) You have to pass several checks to get an app in an official app store. An app ransoming off secrets would have made front page news.
4. The law. Dude that's extortion. It's illegal. I mean it's tricky, as it always in in cases of extortion, but enough attempts someone is going to go to the cops. I think the better lesson here is if whatever you are thinking about can be used as extortion, it probably shouldn't be on your phone at all, or your computer, and certainly not unencrypted.

I dont think this could ever happen on apple, it takes a long time to get your app aproved for the app store.

As for android there security is horrible

A wise person once said "apple's worst security setting, is better than android's best"

Well lets face it, there are backdoors built into almost all computers, tablets, and other electronic device. How do you run away from it? Build your own PC?

But then, the motherboard! It seems suss... Better not use it.

And so you will have to make your own PC basically from scratch. Unless you can modify some old motherboards from the 90s, when people were not so obsessed with all this terrorism and spying on individuals wasn't officially considered "for the greater good".

I have a healthy sense of paranoia, it's not like I am making things up in my head.

Step 1... Assume all technology has disadvantages. Especially the ones which connect to the internet.
Step 2... Look up articles on backdoors built into machines and affirm my paranoia.
Step 3... Try to find proof myself or by a friend I am close to, Reactor once said that he installed Linux on the same desktop which had Windows, and when he logged into his Linux account he got warnings about port scannings, the name of the group who did these port scannings was "microsoft".

Seamonkey is asserting that "healthy paranoia" is an oxymoron, i.e. that "healthy" and "paranoia" are contradictory. I disagree, but whatever.

Certainly Seamonkey would have to admit that there are always levels and degrees to how paranoid a person can be.

I consider healthy paranoia to be more aware of what is happening. Certainly checking for spy devices in every room you go to would be unhealthy paranoia. Unless you are someone who contradicts a political party, in which case, you will need that paranoia.

Paranoia/Fear are a good thing.

Sure.

That's not paranoia. Being aware of what's happening, and realizing that government agencies or whatever may be doing some bad stuff is OK - but that's not paranoia. Paranoia is the suspicion and mistrust of people or their actions without evidence or justification. For people in the US (and I guess Britain), the Snowden leaks confirm that mass surveillance (albeit surveillance that gains little direct info), is the status quo.

Yeah, I'll buy that - to be fair though I would put this on par with mass embedded hardware for surveillance in motherboards.

I contradict most political parties. Somehow I don't think they care.

the app probably wouldn't blackmail you, but instead probably copies your data and sends it to advertisers.
