Valve was probably watching to see if Gordon Freeman won, and if he didn't, then they would delay Half-Life 3 for another couple of years! But in all seriousness, I'm glad it wasn't a Mario vs Link type ending, because then it just ends up being some big flamewar about which one is better, then link ends up winning.

Gordon Freeman isn't a hero! He's a man, who was in the right place at the right time, like John McClane or the guy who invented Silly Putty. Um, okay, he's a hero.

I love Gordon, but I think it's a little too obvious to "anoint" him. Course, Mario wouldn't have meant anything much different: only the bestselling characters would have gotten in.

Now BOUAPHA! There's a bald hero. He's like John McClane now, since Bruce went bald. Now Bouapha just needs to drive a car into a helicopter. [Heelllooo, world builders...].

Ehh-xcellent point, Miii-ster Onion. Now, wake up and smell ... whatever that is. Man that stinks.

Anyways, I remember hearing from the profane "Yahtzee" Croshaw himself how Gordon appeals to a lot of "nerds", given how he's a scientist who can kick Marine behinds and has an attractive fiesty female co-hort.
