Default #57 - Author, Author

I figure that the title is a huge clue, but can't seem to zero in on the text and which one of the obvious sports it is referencing. I tend to follow the train of thought that memorable Olympic events in the past are important, but the names at the bottom don't seem to relate at all to anything. All I get are strange scientific papers...hmm.

I know! How funny is that! Maybe Jamul can merge the two since it will avoid confusion.

I deleted my thread as it didn't really state anything but the obvious.

So, it seems to reference hockey and the prestigious award long in name and history. The Stanley Cup has a long history but not really a long name. It must at least be a team sport as it refers to "our heroes" so that should eliminate solo sports like figure skating and speed skating.

The hockey playoffs now run into mid June so perhaps the reference to mid May means back when there were fewer teams and the finals were earlier? The Winter Olympics have never run in May so that must be out...

Yes, I first thought about the US vs. USSR game in 1980 in Lake Placid, but that was in February. The line "inlaid ice" is the one that sticks out the most to me, which makes me think hockey is more probable than Ice Skating or Ice Dancing...

The names at the bottom throw me off quite a bit. The second name has no results in a google search, which leads me to believe there is something cryptic going on here. The first name gives me college baseball and specific scientific papers (the Y in the middle refers to another author on those papers).

Lets just say you are circling the answer from the non-intended direction.

I think the key is in the title... as you well know...

Given that dumb will be not updating for awhile I think it is good to at least let this one go more than a day before it is solved by everyone!

Haha, and let me enjoy the No. 1 dumber throne alone for a while without it getting overly squeezy.

Besides a little mistake in the last line, it's do-able.

Though you might need to think out a little bit.

And yes, without the author, there is ABSOLUTELY no way in which you can solve this puzzle.

So better solve the author part first...

Think really hard about the author, it's pretty literal.

Zhey.

there is a small mistake in the puzzle actually.

[discussion of puzzle problem removed just in case, it is fixed]

Sorry about that - hopefully Jamul can fix... but just want to be fair... if you got to the point of that mattering you probably were fine anyways...

Hmmm, okay. I got the author part (pretty clever) but don't understand how to apply it.

I finally got the author part figured out. Like J though, I haven't figured out how to apply it yet. These things always make me feel like an idiot.

Hallelujah! After months of plugging away at these wonderful puzzles, I have finally solved them all. And I have to say, this very last one has become one of my favourites. Very, very slick. (It probably helped that I didn't have to Google the very last step - unfortunately. ) Now I have no idea what to do with myself.

OK, a good hint to put us in the right direction would be awesome. I assumed what everyone else said about the hockey at Lake Placid. Not sure what else to think

I really enjoyed this puzzle. I like the ones where the answer dawns on you and it is such an "ah-ha!" moment. I liked it even more since I'm a huge fan of the subject matter.

1. Figure out what the authors mean...

2. I liked this one almost as much as puzzle #45...

Ok, here's my hints for this:

1) As someone noted, the names are not google'ing anything worthwhile. Focus on them first

2) A frequency analysis may help, particularly if you're stuck on the names.

3) It is very likely that you may hit the right direction for the answer from the text alone, but there is another message hardwired into the puzzle which narrows down exactly what you need to answer - and this is encoding is not unique to Dumb puzzles.
