Question The Unofficial Trivia Contest Thread

The Unofficial Trivia Contest Thread

How it works:
  1. A question is posted every day at 9:30AM Central time, plus or minus a couple of hours.
  2. Each question remains open for 48 hours (this may be reduced eventually based on participation)
  3. If you think you know the answer to a question, PM me (diginova) with your answer.
  4. Also in your PM, you can put in a request for the next question topic. All requests will be put in a queue and taken out one at a time.
  5. Each question has a point value from 1 to 25. If you get it right, that point value will be added to your score.
  6. No googling (or other-search-engine-ing). Use your own brain.
  7. All normal Hamumu rules must be followed.
  8. The latest question will not be grayed out.
  9. Every fifth question is worth all 25 points, and is of a format unlike all the others.
  10. Question 26 of 25 has five different answers, and is worth up to 185 points, so anyone can end up coming out on top.
  11. A perfect score (not including bonuses) is 560.

You're supposed to PM him with the answer, not post it in this thread :P

Question Re: The Unofficial Trivia Contest Thread

Since the answer (though incorrect) was posted in this thread, the question ends early. The correct answer was chlorophyll, from chloros (green) and phyllon (leaf). The next question expires 9:30 AM CDT on 28 July 2007.

Correct answers:
AtkinsSJ

Incorrect answers:
ElMikkino, Jamul

Penalties:
ElMikkino -5 (not-following-rule-ness)

Current Rankings (1 out of 25 questions):
AtkinsSJ +8
Jamul 0
ElMikkino -5

.
Value: 11 /Category: Your Choice / Expired

The answer is Mercury.

This is a Your Choice question. Choose the category you want to answer; the answer is the same for all three questions.

Astronomy: This planet has been visited by only one spacecraft, Mariner 10. Chemistry: This element was known as "hydrargyrus" in Latin. Mythology: Which Roman god was the counterpart of the Greek Hermes?

EDIT: Remember, if you think of a category you want to see, just PM it. All categories, no matter how specific or inane, will be considered (as long as a Hamumu-appropriate question can be created from said category)

I know the answers to all 3 of those.

EDIT: What do you mean ''the answer is the same for all three questions.''?

The answer to the question in all three categories is the same. Whether you choose the Astronomy, Chemistry or Mythology question, you should come up with the same correct answer.
And PM to see if you're right, Mr. Evil Random-Voting Vegetable.

Does it matter how fast you get the answer in?

Nope, as long as you get it in before the deadline is up. (which just happens to be in 20 hours).

The deadline may decrease to 24 hours over time, depending on how fast people answer.

Value: 15 / Category: Pick Your Poison / Expired
SUGGESTED BY MR. ONION

The Answer is Arts: Tom Clancy, Sciences: Maxilla

Choose which of the two questions you want to answer, or go for a Double Major and answer both for a chance at a 5-point bonus.

Arts: This author's first novel was turned into a 1990 Academy Award-winning film starring Sean Connery, Alec Baldwin and James Earl Jones; earning more than $200 million at the box office. Worth 15.

Sciences: The mandible is the lower human jaw bone; this other M anatomical term is the name for the bone that forms the upper jaw. Worth 15.

Double Major: Answer both the Arts question and the Sciences question. Worth 20 if both answers are correct; worth 8 if only one answer is correct.

Why on earth are you offering less points if we get one answer wrong?

Because you don't have to answer both

Basically you're risking points to get more points

Exactly what Dr. Gamer said.
You only got 1/2 of the question right, so you only get half of the points. You get a bonus of 5 if you get both.

A friendly reminder:

Remember the rules...
No googling (or other-search-engine-ing). Use your own brain.
Note: there are ABSOLUTELY NO PRIZES for coming in first. This is just for fun. Using a search engine just makes it less fun for everyone. It's like using a cheat on the first world of Supreme with Cheese.

No penalties will be taken off for googling. This game works on the honor system.

The preceding has been a paid announcement from diginova.

It's rather obvious to tell after 5 questions or so... I also have some where the easy Google answer is the wrong one.

It's mostly honor system... you're just cheating yourself (and others)

So you're saying that people who actually know all the answers will be assumed to be cheating?

Not at all. It gets obvious after a while if they get... I ran an e-mail. trivia contest at my college, and after 20 questions, I could specifically tell who was cheating. Telling the people that actually know the answer from the people who parroted what Google gave them is simple. I'm not expecting anyone to cheat, anyway. It's just a forum trivia game. Let's just say that Google gives links to sites that aren't 100% accurate...

What if someone already looked up those sites (without seeing the question)?
Obviously it would be in their head, but it'd be wrong.

Sure, but what are the chances they'd do it for all 8 of the questions that are like that? Anyway, I'm just assuming you're following the rules. I will not assume or think that anyone is cheating.

Let's end this discussion with this: I hope nobody cheats, and I assume that nobody will. This game works on the honor system. There are no prizes for winning, so why would you cheat to win?

EDIT: NO POINTS WILL BE TAKEN OFF. If you know the answer, submit it; you'll get the satisfaction of knowing that you knew it yourself.

Now, since it got buried by this discussion, a reminder: Question 3 is posted, and will expire at 9:30 AM CDT on 30 July. If you have any further questions about this, PM me. Let's keep the discussion in this thread to questions about the wording or details of the question.
