Speed is relative. So, in theory, we are going at the speed of light right now, compared to any beam of light, and it is perfectly still.

Yep, that pretty much sums it up.
We were talking about this is Science the other week. We weren't meant to, but were anyway...

Infinitely close is the best way to describe it. We also mentioned momentum and drag, but I can't remember what conclusion we came to about them.

Time doesnt exist, it is plainily a Mesurment of how long it has been. So you cant go back in something that doesnt Exist!

So how come time slows down at relativistic speeds?

And also, how come upon different distances from a gravitational centre, time runs at different speeds.
For example, satellites orbitting the Earth often run at different times, so have ot be adjested.

The universe is made of 3 laws; space, time, and gravity. In order to even go at the speed of light, you would have to become wavelegnth particles. Theoretically, you would have to twist the space & gravity laws; otherwise, you would get caught in something's gravitational pull and slow down. Plus, it would take a few years even if we had the technology to propel us at light speed, or you would die from fatal G-forces.

However, time travel is not, theoretically, impossible. In fact, all it takes is a good amount of space (matter or energy) to pull time in weird ways to travel back in time. However, with the currently-developed time machine (which isn't even guarenteed to work, and will probably be done in 100 years if succesful) would only be able to go as far back in time as the time machine was turned on; otherwise, there wouldn't be a running time machine to propel you further back.

Which is why they can't have invented it in the future and come and given it to us. Plus, you can't go to the future because THE FUTURE DOESN'T EXIST YET!

You haven't taken into consideration wormholes. They can take to theorectically anywhere and anywhen in the universe...

@SpaceManiac, But you can get to the future, because it will exist by the time you get to it.

Cow. This is the future compared to when I wrote the first part of the post, even though it is only a second later. Time is relative.

Precisely, both of you! You can't go into the future any faster than everything else, because everything else would have to be going the same speed as you!

Actually, that's not what I meant. Say you activated a time machine that takes you 10 years into the future. You and your machine disappear, and then don't reappear for 10 years, at which point you step out the same as you were 10 years ago.

Hmm... I suppose that would make sense. I always get confused when talking about time travel.

But the question is, where would you go? What would happen to you?

You can't visit the future. Just like you never reach tomorrow. It is always now.

EDIT: Also, you could never go faster than light simply because when you reached the SoL, time would theoretically stop for you. And if you're frozen in time, you can't accelerate.

My understanding is that scientists have actually figured out how to create wormholes (or create a rip in the fabric of space), but they only stay open for an INCREDIBLY short period of time and they can't be given specific "directions", like where they lead to.
Maybe I should've read that Wiki article before saying anything.

Wouldn't time travel totally do away with reality (unless it was closely controlled)? I mean, you'd have all these people traveling back in time (however they would), and whenever they got to the past, that would be their PRESENT, right? So the past, present, and future would become entirely subjective, right? Eh?

(These scientific conversations are interesting, but it's not like we're breaking any new ground. Just talking about already-talked-about stuff.)

I say, since the cake is a lie, he should be the first one to try out time travel. Then send him back long ago, to the Prozac Age! Good riddance to him!

Plus, if time travels existed, would we see people coming to our time? To see the War on Terror or something?

The only hypothetical means of time travel we have so far would only take you as far back as the machine was turned on.

Also, it is also theorized that there are billions of parallel universes to our own, and when you use a time machine, it would warp you off to one of those parallel universes.

I want a Stutterwarp drive. Teleporting a micrometer at a time a gugul times per second is fun.

I will state the actual equations from Einstein's theory of relativity. All bow in awe of my knowledge. The energy of any particle is equal to mc/√(1-v/c). If you're travelling at the speed of light, v=c, so your energy is mc/0. Do you remember learning in math class that you can't divide by zero? There's another equation that measures "time dilation", the slowing of time when you go super-fast. The equation is t=t'√(1-v/c), where t' is the "normal" time. When you travel at the speed of light, this equation becomes t=t'(0), or even more simply, t=0, meaning that time has stopped! As I said, all bow in awe of my knowledge!

Nevermind. x/x = 1, not 0.
