Lightbulb Robot Takeover!

If artificially intelligent computers managed to become more intelligent than people within the next 20 years, should those sentient computers have legal rights equal to humans? And by 'intelligent', I don't just mean 'has lots of memory' - I mean the actual ability to create new ideas, adapt their programming to new situations, and presumably have a personality.

I don't think such computers should be built, so I am not voting.

If they can do all of the above plus physically move around, then is there any way we can say no? (Unless we keep them in check from the start of their superintelligence.) Of course, they would have been extremely well-developed, which I really doubt will happen in the next 20 years.

All in all, though, I mostly agree with Ryuinfinity (although I'd say they couldn't be built, not shouldn't.)

EDIT: Note that I didn't vote, because I have mixed feelings on the issue.

If there's still a way for us to easily "control" their actions if necessary and possibly deactivate them somehow, then yes, we could say "no" and force strict rules on them (or grant them rights if we chose to). If, however, nothing like that is possible, and they were designed to be more effective/powerful/whatever than humans, it won't take them long to realise that they are strong, and then they'll go maverick and enslave the human race, whether or not we gave them the "legal rights" to do that. -o_-o Artificial intelligence is a complicated thing; if we enable a robot to think for itself, we can't expect it to display the same ethical understanding as a human, because it simply isn't one.

If they are properly able to emulate a full range of human emotion are are just as harmless (or destructive) as humans, there's no reason we shouldn't grant them human rights.

Robots are people too! Don't make me call PETR!

I don't think computers will ever be built to be something like HAL with their own personality and such.

Knowing basic facts about programming robots, I'd have to say that it's really quite impossible to create intelligence or even human level ability. However, assuming that they could exist, I see no reason not to give them rights. They can't possibly be more dangerous than humans are.

If they get legal rights, they could simply just take over everything. And by the time everything is robotic, nobody could stop them.

Or, it's called firing the entire planet into the Sun. Either could work - it's just a matter of personal preference.

Also, what's to say the robots haven't already taken over. I mean, of course there are no robots, just me having a joke. Yes, yes. Get back to your normal lives. Nothing to see here.

If I had an AI as smart as a human, I would make sure it has a strong knowledge of right and wrong, then I would use it to make video games that I could sell for lots o cash. He would also be used to help me win the Turing Awards!

You probably want to try for Turing before teaching it right and wrong, or it might refuse to lie.

My opinion is, rather than building superintelligent robots with full bodies, we should build body suits that enhance a human's natural ability.

Or... invent something useful, like a way of preventing cars going faster than the speed limit, and such.

Or which eliminates the need for cars at all, like energy-matter teleporters.

As long as there's a pretty reliable method of transport which doesn't involve effectively blowing yourself up, I'm happy not to do that.
