Default I think I have a virus

No, I don't mean Windows Vista... I mean a virus I must've gotten off of the internet somehow. At first, my mouse wouldn't move for brief periods of time and the computer would use alot of processing power for no apparent reason so I shut off the computer, however, now the computer won't start up! It gets past the "Starting Windows Vista" screen but crashes soon after and restarts. I've tried safe mode and last known good configuration, but those do not work. Will I need to patch/restore the install of Windows? If I do use the Vista DVD to restore the system files, will I be able to keep my files, get online, and download AVG?

I have another computer. Although its a Mac so it is garbage. The problem with the Mac is that it is missing updates and crashes alot. Anyways, I am going to try to "repair" the files by using the Vista install CD that was in the box.

well you can push F11 (I think) before your computer starts up to returning it to the way it was when you first bought it, but you'll lose everything.

A better idea is just to reinstall the OS after backing it up.

Well, using the startup repair produced no results and neither did using a system restore or last known good configuration. Now there are five solutions I can think of.

1. Try again and hope for the best
2. "Borrow" a hard drive from a DVR or computer to boot from
3. Burn and boot from a Linux CD
4. Order an Ubuntu CD to boot from
5. Demand help

Copy all important files to a external hard drive, (preferably from Linux) then wipe the disk*, and reinstall the OS.

*Not strictly necessary, but guareentees the rebuilt system is clean.

I've had Vista for around half a year, and I can honestly say that's a misconception. The only reason some people think Vista is bad is because it's so different from XP. Once you get used to it, you'll be better off, really.

macs are NOT garbage well the new ones aren't.
if it is more than 3 years old it is; you just need a newer one.

From the command prompt on the repair options, will I be able to erase my hard drive or can I do this in the install? Also, can I back up stuff in the install?

Assuming it's somewhat similar to XP, when you're doing the new install you should be able to delete the partition of your hard drive that Vista was on and create a new one in the empty space, which will delete everything that had been there. I don't know how you would copy your data first, though -- you might be able to from the command line in the Recovery Console, if you know how to use the command line (which I don't), but if I were you I would take Onion's advice and burn a Linux disc, boot from that, and copy your data to an external hard drive from Linux. http://www.ubuntu.com/getubuntu/download

Well, the Linux thing seemed too complicated, so I nuked my hard drive and installed Vista. Now, I cannot find out what my wireless card is and cannot download any drivers for it. I know it is a Belkin Wireless Card that had 802.11 in it's driver name, but that's about it. Please help!

Well, I hope you didn't have anything that important on there then.... Go to Windows Update and see if it will identify the card automatically and download the correct driver. Or go to Computer Management (right-click on My Computer and click Manage, if they still have that in Vista), Device Manager, and look under Network Adapters or Other, and if there is something with a yellow question mark it might give you the name, and possibly a way to get the driver from Windows Update.

Default Warning: May contain trace amounts of rant

<rant> I've already tried that, but guess what! Apparently, the only semi-functioning computer in the house, my Mom's computer was either hidden or pointlessly taken on a camping trip by a certain someone in my family who has run headfirst into the most evil 3 letter acronym ever! So, yeah. I'm just left with a stupid, non-functioning Mac that crashes when online half the time. I'd be truly blessed if I could even get this thing to download a very specific wireless card driver for a model of wireless card somebody should tell me if by some small chance they remember, and sift through a bunch of super-specific drivers when I could've just downloaded a generic driver that Belkin was apparently too lazy to make sitting on their fat stacks of cash from selling obscure models of wireless cards. </rant>

When (or if) you get your computer fixed you should buy an anti-virus program. Norton antivirus works good for me. About 5 years ago we noticed that our old junky computer was going reeeeeeeeeeeally slow. we got norton and scanned the computer and found about 20 virus's. because there were so many, we just bought a new computer. Also now I've found spyware is a lot more common. I usually find somthing called a "tracking cookie" That tracks what websites I go to (until I delete it)

I load stuff fine. In fact, I have a download speed of about 370 kilobytes per second. That's an MP3 in less than a minute. Anyways, by hooking up my computer to the router directly using a cable, I was able to access the internet. I'm watching the Angry Video Game Nerd as we speak/type.
