Thumbs down Invite-Only Social Groups

Yes, the invite-only groups for stuff like A-League Mafia players is fine, but there are the annoying "Friends Only" group where only friends are allowed, and some other pointlessness like the awesome group. It's just all you can't come in, too bad!, which annoys me.

So your opinion, like or dislike pointless invite-only Social Groups?

There's no /real/ point to the social groups at all. They'd be better if at least there was a notification of when someone had posted in one you're part of.

But yeah, about 90% of the social groups are utterly meaningless, whether invite-only or not. I don't see why people would be bothered about not being able to join - it's not like the 'Awesome Group' is actually a sign of your value to society.

EDIT: Join The 'There are too many groups' Group!

As annoying as many groups in general are on any social gathering site, people are going to make groups so that they feel like they can be a part of the group. The good thing is, most of these groups are going to fail. To have a successful group requires dedication and meaning. By meaning, I mean it should have a point (like for hobbies).

This is also going into the realm of fan websites, but, I am aware there are websites dedicated to specific franchises, notably video games. These people who host and regularly visit the more successful websites have a strong feeling towards these video games. It can be easier to make a successful website if there currently isn't a website for the franchise in question and if you have the dedication (surprise!) to keep the website going.

To conclude, groups need to have meaning and dedication. If either is missing, the group will likely crash and burn.

Apart from the fact that groups do not auto-delete.

They're only annoying until you join one. Then they are fun, though admittedly still rather pointless.

I think that group has failed already, because clearly 2 people are in it, so one of them must have joined.

My friends group is moderated, so most people can join, except for a couple.

I just don't join any groups unless it's something I really feel like joining, then I just join it, then ignore it!

As a handy alternative to a group for someone's friends, try the already-built-in friends thing!

No, it makes people want to be their friend, then they turn out to be friends for another cause. At least for me.

Groups that have only one person should be deleted after a period of time, imo [if nobody else joins], but that doesn't mean people shouldn't be allowed to make invite only social groups...
