I'm surprised you expect people to know about this, but by a happy coincidence, I do. I think it's a good idea, but incompatible with modern life in most cases.

An awesome concept, but I definitely agree that modern norms would prevent you from leading a normal life. Still, considering the human being is a primarily biphasic sleeper by nature, and we adapted to monophasic, I do not see why polyphasic wouldn't be possible.

Also- google is your friend.

I said I already know about it. One of my friends used to use the Everyman schedule.

The google reference was for the benefit of everyone else that doesn't. And I am very tempted to try Uberman over the summer...

Dolphins are Polyphasic Sleepers, right? Otherwise, I'm wrong.

Uberman is in the middle of the three most defined styles. It is not the most difficult to adjust to, nor the easiest, and it does not offer the greatest increase in wake time, but not the worst either.

That's interesting.. If I can find a way to get around my Wal-Mart hours, I might give that schedule a try.. I've always been interested in sleeping less, and it would definitely help my grades having more time to study.

Unless, of course, you get worse grades from not being able to study as well from lack of sleep.

Not really.. At least, not after I get used to it. At first, yeah, I'd be a zombie, but after a few weeks when my brain kicks in gear I'd actually be getting more REM sleep than someone sleeping 8 or 9 hours, which results in more energy for me to use 'till my next nappy time.

The average person gets one and a half hours of REM sleep per 8-9 hour sleep session. That's because the person cycles through the phases of sleep while they sleep, never giving REM much time to work. What Uberman sleepers do is train their bodies to kick straight into REM for the duration of their 20-30 minute nap. Which means that they can get 2-3 hours of REM sleep compared to the 1 1/2 that a normal person gets. Which results in more energy and more free time.

It's the closest thing you can get to cheating life. But I definitely think the best time to begin it would be during the summer, since the first few weeks would be rough, and not help school at all.

I learned today that the body cycles between deep sleep and light sleep roughly every 90 minutes, so a person who falls asleep at 10 PM and wakes up at 7 AM will feel much more rested than someone asleep at 10 and awake at 7:30. The only problem is, you'd pretty much have to be able to fall asleep and wake up on command, which is not an easily attainable thing.

If that's true, it's very bad. I've heard that without SWS, you will go insane and die.

I personally know many people who have been doing this long term and are not yet insane or dead. At least, no more insane than they were going in.

What schedule, Uberman? I'm not debating Uberman sleeping is possible, but simply that there is no SWS in such a schedule.

The only things I know of that SWS does are 3 things: Help you grow, help the body heal from sickness, and produces some chemicals.. As long as you are old enough to have stopped growing significantly, you don't need that part. I have no idea how effective the sickness part is, but just be safe and you shouldn't need it much. As far as the chemicals, I hear grapes and grape juice has most of what SWS produces. And your body will get weird cravings for things that it needs. Your body knows what it needs, so if you listen to it you'll be ok.
