Default Apocalyptic stuff

Has anyone else noticed an increase in apocalyptic stuff on TV and the internet lately? I don't know why, but it looks like the "powers that be" want to freak out the populace for some reason. I heard there was a study which showed that people who were bummed out and rattled spent more money. Ominous, eh?

Something must be happening.

Well, at least the bummed and rattled people are helping the economy by spending more. At least, I think that's how it works... Anyway, I actually haven't heard much, but I was worried H1N1 was to turn into a monster virus in the spring. So far, so good.

The Zombie Apocalypse is a metaphor for modern man's hypnotically induced state of near catatonia. It seems to be getting worse.

There is no apocalypse. Go back to your fun.

No really. Doomsayers make me want to be evil.

Same here. If doomsday theories were true, the world would have ended in 2003, 2002, and sometime in the late 1800's.

My Dad, who is in his mid seventies, has told me that all his life he was told to be afraid of one thing or another that was supposed to ruin the world as we know it. First it was the Nazis (he lived through WWII), then the Russians, and that went on for a long time. More recently it has been Islamic terrorists, and the most recent thing is global warming. I'm not saying we shouldn't act on the environmentalism movement; I am in favour of greatly increasing natural habitats and humans having a much smaller collective footprint. But I don't think we should be panicking. Setting up national parks, yes. Growing fish in fish farms and letting the sea regenerate itself, yes. Try to counteract the effects of a natural solar cycle on our planet? Why? Let's adapt.

But Global warming isn't just a natural thing. We're undoutably making it worse. You can't deny that Carbon Dioxide is a greenhouse gas. You can't deny that burning carbon based fuels creates more of it. You can't deny that the Amazon, one the world's largest rainforests, is being cut down.
Therefore, you cannot deny that humans are making global warming worse.

But you can argue the extent of it. We're doing something to the environment, but nobody's sure how much damage that'll actually cause in the long-run. (Still a good idea to save carbon in the long run, though)

Actually, the globe does naturally warm like this, just this is being exaggerated by us. Also, it may end up plummiting into a massive ice age after this...

Yeah, the ice age will be a bit worse than global warming, seeing that humanity is a tropical animal and not a polar one.

Indubitably we are contributing the problem of global warming. But it is absurd to think that we could stop it on our own. Therefore we should continue with the emissions reductions by all means, but also continue with other equally important activities, like preservation of habitat. Global warming is affecting all species on Earth, and no doubt contributing to the high levels of extinctions that are apparently occurring. So we need to preserve habitat for those vulnerable species so that they can adapt to the new climate too.

I saw another apocalyptic show tonight, "The Nostradamus Effect". I thought it was really heavy handed and unnecessarily alarming. They claimed to neither endorse nor deny the idea of the imminent apocalypse, but the show worked really hard to get under your skin and try to freak you out.

I think an alien ark of fluffy bunny aliens are going to land on the earth; would that be the end of the world as we know it?

Do you know what will happen in 2012?

It's HUGE!

I'll graduate. :P

Anyways, that aside, the world isn't going to suddenly end. The reason that a lot of things become huge and fearsome is because of the media, who today tends to "make stories" rather than report them. For example, H1N1 was hyped up by the media, but it didn't really have that much impact.

Humans are tough creatures, and have survived for many years. Assuming we don't nuke ourselves somewhere down the road, we should be able to adapt to the Earth's natural changes (i.e. Ice Age). The only time the world will truly end will be when the Sun dies (which will happen in a couple hundred billion years).

The biggest risk to us isn't anything natural, not even global warming. It's those little silos with something called a "nuclear missile" in them.
