There were several obvious flaws in this game:
  1. You failed to provide a host signup list. How do you know it was your turn to host?
  2. You allowed less than 4 hours for player signups. Many people missed their opportunity to play.
  3. It wasn't balanced, as the host failed to provide 25% of one player to be mafia.
  4. There were no special power roles to help the town, leaving them at a huge disadvantage.
  5. There were many non-players interfering with the game, probably leading to cheesefairy9 having an unfair advantage over all of the other players.
  6. Cheesefairy9 may now try to use his successful survival to the end of this game in an effort to qualify himself for hosing.

Alright, look.

First of all, nobody else had signed up for 1-player mafia before. That gives Atkins the right to start it without a list.
Even if more people had the opportunity to play, they still wouldn't, because cheesefairy9 signed up first, and thus, the required players to start had signed up.
To take a 25% percentage out of a one-person group, you have to cut the person into fourths. That would clearly kill the person, thus disqualifying them from playing mafia in the first place. To avoid that, changing the percentages a bit is necessary.
No game needs special roles, very small games are usually composed of vanilla towns, and mafias. A cop is optional, but in a small game, the mafia would have a bigger disadvantage.
Unless you are talking about the advantage of existance, cheesefairy9 had absolutely no advantage over other players, no matter how many outsiders interfered.
And lastly, there is no rule restricting people who may host 1-player mafia games. Atkins had no previous experience on them, and he still hosted. I don't see why cheesefairy wouldn't be allowed to do it in the first place.

Hmmm. I did consider giving the town an anti-power, with the Hermit being a paranoid gun owner.

Personally, I think this was really good for my first time hosting - nobody lurked, and I didn't get the rules muddled. But yeah, I should have signed-up on the list really.
