Default Should I ask for a keyboard or a guitar for Christmas?

If a keyboard, how many keys should it have?

If it's a guitar, should it be electric or acoustic?

Isn't 88 standard for a (musical) keyboard?

But it may be easier to learn on a smaller keyboard, or there may be other reasons to get a smaller or larger one.

When I thought of keyboard I thought of computer keyboard. I though it was kind of asking for either underwear or an XBox 360 for Christmas.

Get a keyboard. Everyone's already learning guitar, so go against the flow.

Get a grand piano.

Not just any grand piano, get the worlds longest grand piano!

Oh wait, you can't, it's too heavy to move...

:P

But seriously, get a piano, not a keyboard.

realistically getting a piano is a bit much if you're just starting to show interest for it, as a piano runs for about $2000-3000 and around $10.000 for a half-decent grand piano. Anyways, as to answering the question, definitely get a keyboard, if you get one with multiple voices then it can be used for all sorts of things (like guitar sounds).

Also, the piano(/keyboard) does both harmony and melody, making it much better for soloing when it comes to making a large array of music. Whereas the guitar can do melody (riffs) or harmony (chords)(and not to say chords can't be melody and vice versa); doing both at the same time would take quite the amount of talent and practice.

Anywhosm, yeah, get the keyboard, guitars are great, but at this level you'll get more out of the keyboard.

Personally, Guitar gets you more chicks, but keyboard is probably a better idea.

NO. Drums are absolutely obnoxious.

I guess I'm going with a keyboard, even though guitars look cooler >_>

There are a million more reasons to support the keyboard option that I could bring up, but I am just going to leave this here and let you be the judge. Have you seen anything like that played on a guitar? I haven't.
And even though he was joking, I am with Megadog here. Grand pianos are awesome. If you have the option to, get one. I wish I could.

tar, not taur, but close.

Yeah, that would fix your dilemma, but create new ones...

Keytars > all

speaking of keytars, time to add one to my wishlist.

and,
@pumpkineater: more notes != better, obviously we've never seen anything like that on guitar, it's a piece for piano/harpsichord, you can't judge two instruments based on what songs you can play on them, since they have different purposes as instruments. It's like saying Tubas > Drums because you can't play any melody or harmony on drums.

Yes, because that would be a lie. Tune drums and you can play a melody!

If you're serious about learning to play you are better off with a real keyboard rather than a roll up. If your folks can afford it get one that has weighted keys it will be easier to play a real piano later cuz you'll be used to the touch. At least 48 keys is really the bare minimum you need to learn to play.

If you just want to fool around on it and do cool sounds for SWC then Don't owrry about 48 keys, get the one with the most cool effects and a USB port. Oh and headphones are a relly good idea so you can blast it and not bother your parents or neighbors.

I saw a good deal for a velocity-sensitive 49 key roll-up USB keyboard. I may have to request that.
