Default 8.9 Earthquake in japan

WOW. an 8.9, 65 aftershocks and counting (many over a 6.0) and a 23 ft tsunami!! At least it was isolated in japan.

Because not much can withstand a 9.0 magnitude earthquake, which this was in some areas I believe (but the majority of reports do say 8.9).

um... no. the earthquakes epicenter was in the ocean. hence the tsunami. the epicenter just happened to be close enough to cause land shaking. and in places that are close to active faultlines, the buildings tend to be built more earthquake proof.

needless to say, it depends on how well the buildings are built when saying what can withstand a 9.0. in areas with few earthquakes, total devastation would have occurred. earthquake aside, the tsunami seems to have caused most of the devastation. those who were lucky enough to live inland only felt the earthquake.

Actually, damages from liquefaction are pretty much inevitable in these situations, and that was not discovered long enough ago for most of the buildings to even be relatively protected (it's practically impossible to outright protect it.) from it.

why are you guys insisting that the earthquake did so much damage? most of the devastation was caused by the tsunami. (which was caused by the earthquake, so in turn I suppose the earthquake in a way caused it)

Regardless, not many countries can survive such a tsunami or 6 reactors threatening to meltdown...

oh yeah, I saw the reactors on the vid. It looked like something straight out of a movie... you know, like those big hollywood type explosions...

anyway, I think we can all agree that the earthquake was not the worst part.

Well, considering it made both the other bits, I'd say it was, as it was EVERYTHING, but to each his own.

Only long term, Death is right, the Tsunami is the worst. The nuclear disaster, while dangerous, will kill few. The only real effects of it will be that the area will be uninhabitable.
