Yerfdog Sleepless Hollow Beta and World Guide

Beta Information

Halloween saw the release of the beta for the graphics update to Sleepless Hollow, featuring

Journal Announcement
My Downloads Page

New Features (as of 2.0d)
  • Everything new to Supreme for 8.0d is included and most of it works!
  • Hollow-ized monster categories
  • Custom world picker on profile creation (only shows if any worlds exist)
  • Disabled internet menu on custom worlds
  • Made editor accessible
  • Made available unused but already included monsters, see Non-Hollow monster category.
  • Included some bonus monsters from Supreme: Minecart, Egg Sac, Yerfdog, Underwater Aquazoid/Magmazoid, Generator
  • Readded removed Death Turret and Missile Turret AI
  • Added experience drop and respawn status to monster selector
  • Made goals, inventory screen, and fishing customizable (see below)
  • Prevented accidental saving over or intentional editing of default world
  • Added a progress indicator for written monster commentary
  • Made resetting a profile reset the full range of level numbers
Coming Soon(TM)
  • Monster graphic changing actually working
  • Maybe a varbar if I think it's actually needed (inventory's darn fancy)
  • More monster commentary - leave requests below!
  • Miscellaneous bugfixes
  • Any further text-file-based customization seen fit
  • A fully original sample custom world by yours truly
  • Anything else as needed

Blackduck and Moltanem's 2010 BHE surprise, Sleepiest Hollow, is included as a zip in the beta installation. Unzip sleepiest_world.zip from inside the world folder onto the root directory of the game to install it and start a new profile to play it. It does not use most of the new features but is a piece of Sleepless Hollow history and a fine example of what you can do with custom worlds.

World Building Guide

There's some wacky stuff you have to do for world building to make sense and I'm here to explain it. At present you must win the game at least once on any profile on the new patch to access the editor, but for power users who wish to access the editor immediately you may create an empty "editor.dat" file in the "profiles" folder to unlock the editor.

Within the editor itself there are a few things of note. First off, the Test feature is disabled. I ran into problems trying to make it work safely (without trampling profile data or constantly crashing the game) so for now it's inaccessible and you'll have to test your worlds LL2-style (though with more profile resetting).

Second, there's a few miscellaneous differences from Supreme. The monster categories have been set up to be more Hollowey and have (unfinished) commentary written by me rather than Jamul. A variety of monsters exist in the code and although their graphics are not included their AIs can still be used and can be found under the "AI Only" category. Monsters included from Supreme can be found under the "Non-Hollow" category. There's also an additonal Special effect, "Kill Monsters in Rect." Some item stats have been repurposed to

Most importantly, a massive amount of customization is now possible through the use of (agian, like LL2) per-world text files. For a world named "shenanigans.dlw", the text file should be named "shenangians.txt" in the same folder. Since there's a lot of info here I've spoilered it. It's a bit hard to understand in parts so if you have questions ask away.

Code:
First line: title as shown on world select
Sections marked with [sectionid], may be in any order or repeated

[title]
Title as shown in profile menu, defaults to the first line.

[pageNN]
Journal contents for page NN, can be 00 for the intro page or 01-19 for specific pages
(page 01 is on map 0 by default). Use ^ as its own word for a new line in the text. Text
may span multiple lines in .txt but spaces between lines must be manually included.

[items]
Customization for inventory screen on pause menu. If omitted, defaults to using same
layout & item IDs as default game. Each line follows format:
pos=item|type|subtype|max|name|description
item is an item ID, see item menu ingame

max is the max value, use 0 for any amount is max - affects only highlighting in menu,
not gameplay
name is name, max 31 chars
description is description, max 63 chars
Note: classic red and mystic hammers must be in their default positions to be clickable

[goals]

goal=name|description
goal from 1 to 25
name is name, max 32 chars
description is description, max 64 chars
Use messages with "@1" through "@25" to award goals in-game.

[fishing]

  0. Give player 20 energy
  1. Heal player 20 health
  2. Give player 10 weapon xp to all weapons
  3. Put flame on player (will drop a candle if you have caught exactly one fish #3,
     including this one if it is fish #3 -- careful of effect 3 not being on fish 3)
  4. Spawn a Darkness on the player
  5. Spawn a Spark on the player
  6. Give the player 200 xp
  7. Levels a random hammer by 1 level
  8. Heal the player 128 health
  9. Poison the player for 1 second
  Other: no special effect
Fish size multiplier
* Line format: size|NUMBER=SIZE
* Number from 0-9
* Size should range from 0.0-3.0 but can be expanded if desired
* Size will be in 0-60 range, plus some bonus points, before multiplier
* For reference, Mudgloppers are 2.0 and Napfish are 3.0.
Fishing difficulty
* Line format: difficulty|MAP=DIFFICULTY
* Map is map number starting at 0
* Difficulty should be from 0 to 100
* You must have at least this much fishing level to fish on that map
Which Fish
* Line format: fish|MAP=NUMBER
* Map is map number starting at 0
* Number is 0-9 (normal fish) or 255 (goldfish)
Notes
* All water is fishable. All mud is fishable but will always be fish #9.
* Type 255 is unwanted goldfish, it has no stats but can be set as the fish for a map.
* If stats on any fish are omitted they will default to those used in standard Sleepless
  Hollow.
* If difficulty or fish on any map are omitted they will default to level 0 fish #0.
* If you don't want a map to be fishable, don't put any water on it (recommended), or
  set difficulty above 100.

[options]
A few specific options used by various parts of Sleepless Hollow. In the format
option=value. If omitted will default to something sane.
* bonecandle: 1 if the yellow key you get by stepping on (63, 53) in the Tomb of Bones
  should be handled. I have no idea why this isn't a special. I should ask Jamul.
* journal: the item number of the journal
* electroreel: the item number of the electroreel
* possibly more later

At some point I will write up tips and tricks on how to use the various mechanics in Sleepless Hollow.

For future readers, an up-to-date guide can be found on the wiki at http://hamumu.wikia.com/wiki/Sleepless_Hollow_Editing. (Note: does not exist at the time of this writing, but will probably exist later.)

Questions, comments, bug reports, suggestions, anything else? Let me know below.

Attempting to place a monster without a graphic in the editor boots you back to the title screen and gives you a case of 'can't use the menu'. I had to escape via Task Manager.

Also comments for traffic and parked cars should happen. Because why not. Also Zombies.

Created the wiki article (very detailed) here and put up a little progress indicator and world listing on Wombat here. If anyone has any suggestions to anything (there's a huge amount of places I can plug in additions) they're welcome.

I must know what you have to say about Laser Up!
In seriousness, Reflection, Flying Pumpkin, Unbreakable Glass, Megaburner, Happy Stick Tree, and the big heads are probably all notable enough to warrant commentary.

I suggest adding The Playable characters from supreme with cheese to
sleepless hollow.
And having the editor allow you to test your world in the editor.

Question Re: Sleepless Hollow Beta and World Guide

Hmm, well since Jamul is really poofed with all his work on Growtopia and thinking about his dream game. I have a question for you Spacemaniac!

I recall that you and blackduck, or somebody else and you, made a text adventure, The Great Minecraft Caper. And I vividly recall that when I clicked on the link, it sent me over to a page still inside Hamumu Software.

Now, if lets say, there are about three worth while Sleepless Hollow addons, will you be able to add a page for that inside Hamumu Software?

That specific thing (a collab with Mr.Onion) was a failed BHE surprise and it was on the site as part of the way we wanted it to work, courtesy of Jamul. I don't have the power to add to the website at will. While it's quite possible a few quality SH worlds would convince Jamul to add an addons section for them, if he's busy I can always list them on Wombat. Either way I'd love to see some SH addons, and don't hesitate to ask if you've got questions or suggestions.

Well thanks for that post Spacemaniac, I will. I think it's time for a new paradigm in worlds. Dr Lunatic Supreme With Cheese in my opinion, seems to be too saturated in the same stuff, while I like many of the worlds, and would play them over and over again, I'd much prefer to have something different from time to time.

My suggestions would be for Sleepless Hollow, to have an option in the editor, where you are able to turn off these messages with "Damage And Life Increased", it can be quite annoying when making a profound world, and then suddenly, this huge message appears!

I am having a huge problem with trying to access the data. I created an editor.dat file and moved it to the "profiles" folder of Sleepless Hollow, but the Editor is not showing. I am confused!

Not exactly sure, perhaps you could double check you have the latest version of Sleepless Hollow? I have version 2.0d and following the instructions to get the editor, I can access it just fine. It also says in this thread "made editor accessible" in the features of version 2.0d

OHHH!! Yes, you are right. It looks like I thought I was installing the Beta version, when actually I was installing the Original. Thanks for your help!

Default ???

I found an odd bug while playing through Sleepless Hollow just now. I made it to the Underhollow and had just killed the Grue and Speedy Hernandez. Once I grabbed the brain outside of Speedy's cave, for some reason I got the #14 Perfectionism comic goal. My profile page confirmed I had 100%. I still had 4 brains left to collect, as well as 4 or 5 candles. Aren't you supposed to get 100% only after winning the game (and getting all the candles, I assumed)?

Also I noticed a typo on the Simulated Head commentary, which says 'fuys' instead of 'guys.'

Edit: In a different playthrough I noticed Big Head Maude spawned before I even opened room #7. Luckily it wasn't game breaking but it made it so I could kill it from outside the room

If you have the spare time, could you try to reproduce the first bug and provide me a zip of all the ProfileName.* files from it? That would help examining it. Also, for both of these, it would be great if you could compare them with the regular release version and find out whether they are unique to the beta.

No problem if you don't have the time, I'll just get to it myself eventually.
