Default Bring Horrifying Entertainment: The Poll!

Wasn't quite sure if there should be a divider between 'Free' and not free games. So there isn't!

Here's some short descriptions and sme links provided by the participants:

1. Doom
"I will justify it because doom."
Just Google or Bing search for Doom. It's a pretty famous game.

2. Alone In The Dark: -_- O_o (With spooky faces! Oh my!)
It's totally the cult classic of MS-DOS gaming history.

Summary: Some dude committed suicide for some unknown reason and you received a cryptic letter sent by him, being a private detective you decide to investigate and the game starts. Not having a clue what to do ensue...

Difficulty: Really difficult but at the same time scary

Gameplay: http://wombat.platymuus.com/ytembed/?code=9yTfKIpfEa4

You can pick up the trilogy at GOG.com for $6

3. Home

Home is 3 dollars on Steam and is a pretty interesting horror/mystery sort of game. It provides a new and interesting experience every game!

4. System Shock 2
Warning: Gore and Psychological scares. But the setting and the story line make it worth it.
Enemies will beg you to put them out of their misery as they attack you.
The blood is more of a "finding corpses and realizing that you're alone" rather than exploding body parts, so its manageable.

It's available from Steam and GoG for the $9.99

You can get System Shock 1 FREE if your dosbox is up for it.

"It's like the poor man's Bioshock!"

5. Penumbra Overture
Summary: You are a physicist, both you're parents are dead, you're 30 years old. You have an okay life. Then you start receiving these letters from your supposedly dead father. They seem to talk about a place in Greenland. So you go there, ignore the fisherman's advice to wait a little longer for the blizzard to pass, get hyperthermia, find an abandoned emergency exit hatch, open it, enter, ladder breaks, scariness starts!

This game requires you to really think in some places, you can't just go running around aimlessly trying to find a result. But if you're really stuck there are always some walkthroughs to help you. (If you're in to CHEATING!)

Trailer: http://wombat.platymuus.com/ytembed/?code=uPwQxF99eMk
Warning: Some gore, and jump scares! AHH!

Download Demo: http://www.penumbragame.com/demo.php

6. Outpost 41
A fan-made knockoff of the ALIENS game, but in a totally different setting.

Summary: You have a squad of four crew members, Jenkins, Brock, Cavanaugh and Morris. The objective is to collect all the paintings made by the aliens (because aliens enjoy pretty things too) and return them to the top floor of the station, where your ship is. They are scattered around the outpost, and are guarded by aliens, which you have to kill. Other, unexpected stuff happens here too, so you have to be really careful!

WARNING: JUMP-SCARES GALORE!

Anonymous Rating: 7/10 Elevator Repair Kits

7. Ao Oni

Summary: A few students decide to enter an abandoned mansion on the outskirts of town because they want to see if the rumor is correct or not about it having a "monster" lurking inside. Because, you know, if there is actually a monster I'm sure it won't mind them being there...

Anonymous Rating: 8/10 Plate Shards

RTP Package: This may be downloaded and installed for the game to work:

Bonus Screenshots:

7.b(8): Nira Oni

Nira Oni is a fan made sequel to Ao Oni, this game is set several years later after their
escape from that horrid mansion in Ao Oni.
http://nira-oni.tumblr.com/

Warning: Game Contains spoilers from Ao Oni

Summary: The four students plus two new characters decide once again to check out rumors about monsters, this time in an abandoned hospital. Must not have been enough terror and gore in the first game to teach them their lesson. They enter, Takeshi faints, and they find the doors have locked suddenly, can't open the door, Hiroshi must get some water for that fainted dude, when Hiroshi comes back with water the group is gone. SCARINESS STARTS!

Anonymous: 9/10 Hospital Beds

Warning: Gore + Language + Jump Scares (Oh my!)

9. Half Life

It's not exactly a horror game, but it can get you at times.

Half Life 2 as well, has better graphics to more sufficiently terrify you. Also the enemies are less fun aliens, and more zombies with their horrible moans and groans. And Ravenholm....

Anonymous Statement: I found Halflife more enjoyable to play, but Halflife 2 probably has more parts that one might consider scary.

You can get these gems on Steam.

There will prizes. More info on that after the polling concludes. Vote honestly!

Prizes will be distributed sometime on October 31st, but the poll goes for slightly longer than that so... If it's after the 31s, your vote means nothing! MUAHAHAHA!
Also forgot to make the poll not-public unless it's like that by default? (EDIT: It is like that by default. SWo poll is private!)
Afterthoughts :/

Personally I don't find doom and half life eligilbe, even though some of the enemies and enviroments in the latter have a horror theme, I find it more about exploration, and a veneer of empoweremnt.

I would have voted for alone in the dark 1, but it said "the trilogy" so ....meh.

Well, any game in the trilogy... Does adding the other two games really deduct that much from the first game?

That'd be my bad for putting that in the poll choice I guess.
(Though it doesn't really matter because [I've said too much])

Half life probably kind of qualifies. It's not about the story per se, which is definitely not horror, but when I played it I jumped once or twice.

You are probably right Doom does not qualify, but once again I justify it because doom.

The jumpiest I've ever been in a game, is easily Shadow Man, but I couldn't offer it up to the poll, because:

1. the excellent comic it's based on went way over family friendly standards.
2: The game is much too long, and if you don't have the booklet contained in the box case, its' practically impossible (Mostly for the map.)
3: Having only played the N64 version, I couldn't be 100% sure that PC/Steam/GoG keyboard controls were fluid, which would definitely make a huge difference- the occasional instant death pits with no nearby save points in Half Life 1- Not even a fraction of what you are asked to do here.
4: Even thinking about the demonic rottweilers evokes fears of them appearing outside my door.
