It'd be pretty hard to lie - it's not hard to take a geiger counter to the beach.

But think about it: the danger behind nuclear power is a meltdown, not carrying radioactive waste around the globe. Even if radioactive material were carried around it would be incredibly spread out - there's an entire ocean. This spread out the radiation received is less than the background radiation you receive every day. (I get 1844 counts over something like 15 minutes where I'm at) Beyond this there is a shielding effect from water/gravel. This extremely unconcentrated material is significantly shielded if it's even a couple of inches under water, or under a couple grains of sand!

Also nuclear reactors don't use cesium, and even if they did the cesium would explode/form cesium hydroxide on contact with water.

Hmm, yes they would explode from cesium reactions with water, that I can agree on. So why is the news reporting cesium spills from the Fukushima plant?

Though "It'd be pretty hard to lie - it's not hard to take a geiger counter to the beach." I've read that a few US states such as California are going to ban geiger counters. This sounds very much like they don't want people to learn the truth on whether significant amounts of radiation have reached US shores.

No one is going to ban a geiger counter, not the least because they're pretty easy to make.

While a quick search revealed no information about anywhere in the U.S. trying to outright ban Geiger counters, apparently in 2008 NYC was considering licensing them.
