Ok, now I understand completely! Jamul, do you have a backup of all the data? :?

No - I could restore the entire website (not just the forum data) to 24 hours back, but then the forum would be unupgraded, and upgrading it would trash it again. I just don't know enough about this to resolve it. Clean sweep is the only real answer if it doesn't keep working from here.

I mean,
What in the forum was upgraded,
Why did it have to be upgraded,
And so on!

the forum software was upgraded. (i don't think it can be explained better.)

and it was upgraded because there were security issues in the old version.

So if a hacker HAD caused the destruction, it'd be too ironic for words!

Just in case I can hopefully somehow put this to rest: it was NOT a hacker, that is 100% for sure. It was just something wrong with the upgrading process. I just don't know what.

I wonder if there's a function that allows you to dump forum contents to a database. If so, you could do the rollback, save all the posts, re-upgrade, then restore any topics that go missing.

Yes - if I went through that (and it's a major thing, the ISP is the one holding the backups of the site!), and upgraded, I'd be in the exact same place we are now, since somehow upgrading broke it. Now surely there's some more right way to do the upgrade so that doesn't happen... but since I don't know what it is, that's not very helpful.

I have backed up the current state, just in case. But let's just hope it doesn't drop dead again!

Well, this topic has been about talked to death. Just one final comment: early this morning there were 606 registered users. There are now 468. Are there 138 people trapped in cyberspace with the lost posts?

It's probably even worse than you think. There are almost 40 pages of posts listed for Dr. L and only about 16 actual pages if you go out and look. I know the Dr. L forum is a busy one, but I don't think that it's possible that that many threads were posted to in less than a month.

The missing people are because I deleted all users who hadn't activated their accounts.

But one problem:
Every time I check for new messages (I see them on the main page)
When I check, it goes to read, even if I've never seen the replys before!

You know, the behavior of that is just so weird... that's what it's always done to me on the laptop, but never on this computer. And on this computer, it used to be just great all around, but now it logs me out if I am away for half an hour (whether I check the box or not). So I just don't know, It seems to be fairly random!
