Here it is:

For those using metric measurements, here are the conversions:
1 cup = 250 ml
1 tsp = 5 ml
375 degrees F = 190 degrees C

This makes a ton of cookies - I usually make 1/4 batch.

Grandma's Oatmeal Chocolate Chip Cookies

6 cups flour
4 tsp salt
4 tsp baking soda
8 cups oatmeal
4 cups shortening
3 cups sugar
3 cups brown sugar
4 tsp vanilla
4 tsp water
8 eggs
8 cups chocolate chips

Mix shortening, sugars, vanilla, water, and eggs with mixer.
In a separate bowl, mix flour, salt, baking soda, and oatmeal.
Slowly stir the dry ingredients into the wet ones until a dough has formed. Stir in chocolate chips.
Bake at 375 degrees for 10 minutes.

Shortening is a type of fat, typically derived from vegetables, that is used for baking. Cookie recipes frequently allow for either butter or shortening to be used, although the choice of product used may have a serious effect on the resultant taste, texture, appearance, or overall healthiness of the cookies.

From the fact that Christian's post has mysteriously disappeared,
I will assume that shortening isn't the same as lard!?! :?

She deleted it herself.

At least in the USA, lard is a type of cooking fat that is an animal byproduct, and she decided not to leave a post that implied it was the same as shortening. which is typically a vegetable byproduct. However, it would have a similar use. I am just not sure how any/all of these things relate to what might be available for use in England, having never been there.

We have butter, margerine and lard.
But I don't really want to use lard in my cookies,
So I guess I'll use marg. and butter!

I typically use butter over shortening in all my cookie recipes unless they specifically state that butter will not work for some reason.

Whenever I see the letters 'MMMB', I get reminded of the Mad Millenium Bug...

Yes, I was confused because my grandma always called Crisco "lard." And you know, I thought grandma was always right, since she was so old and all. But Hammered educated me about the difference. Now I think Hammered is always right, since she is so ... err, umm ... intelligent. Yeah, that's the word I was looking for, intelligent!

I'm afraid I can't be much help on this. I've never made these with anything but shortening.

I'd try butter first, and see how they turn out. Maybe I'll experiment the next time I make these...

It's my experience that a cookie that is good made with shortening will be great when made with butter (and no, that same doesn't hold true for margarine).

I've always used butter, never tried shortening at all. I mean, how can butter EVER be wrong?

Down here in England it is quite hard to get oatmeal,
So I was wondering....
What is the link/difference between Oats and Oatmeal!?!

Thanks.
