Default Problem W/Spam in E-Mail

Jamul:

Recently I've been getting spam e-mails made out to a mass amount of people. Just now, I was checking one of the spam e-mails to see if I knew anybody, and I noticed purplekoopa's name (for no reason really, except I'm on the NSider forums) on the e-mail list. This leads me to believe people are using bots or something to come on the site and e-mail everybody with junk e-mail. One reason I say this is a problem is because I mark the stuff as spam, and it keeps appearing in my inbox, as though sent by a different address. I just thought you should know what those conniving spammers* are up to.

(*No offense to any of the hamumu spammers. :P )

Having that happen is a definite given if you list your email address publicly on the web. As I write this, my email is processing the 1,040 spams that got through my spam filter during the night. And the spam filter catches 90% or more! All because my email is very public all over the place.

So in short: if you don't want spam, don't publicize your email! That's a universal rule. You don't have to show it in your profile, and if someone wants it, you can PM to them. They can't scan the PMs, just public pages.

I have not widely publicized my email address and I've never gotten any spam, ever.

I tend to get several 'Please help us transfer this money and we'll let you keep some. Just fill out your credit card details.' Emails, but that's about it.

Don't worry, I'm not sending you any spam mails. It's kinda confusing. Once I got accused of sending them before.

They're really weird. Sometimes I get spam mail from this one guy I hardly know, I just know he did a few things on this one website I go to.

Hate to tell you, but if you've got an email button here, your email address is definitely getting harvested. It's public! You can change that in your profile if it worries you. Or it's always fun to have a special address you use for that stuff just to see who is doing the evil stuff.

I've gotten TONS of those too. It's a different person every time, Abdul Jomar, Shiela Something, and quite a bunch more. Each time I catch multiple grammar errors, many spelling mistakes, and I've even searched around for a person who sent the mail. It turns out they didn't exist, big surprise

Yeah. The way they come in sets of 2 or three doesn't help you to feel that they're genuine, either. I sometimes read them just to see how awful the spelling is.

And does anyone else get those internet lottery ones? Every month or something, I get about 5 telling me I've won the top prize.

If it comes from someone idon't know i don't even read it.

I found some stuff from www.notepad.com , one of which is an e-mail cloaker. This is what XYZATantipumpkinDOTcom looks like.

Code:

<script language="JavaScript"> <!--
 document.write ('<a href="mai&#1')
 document.write ('08;to:xyz')
 document.write ('@')
 document.write ('antipumpkin')
 document.write ('.')
 document.write ('com">')
 document.write ('xyz @ antipumpkin.com</a>')
 // -->
</script>
EDIT: It accidently compiled.

Those stopped coming about a month ago, just when those 'my father' or 'my boss' or any of the above mentioned e-mail scams started coming.

It is quite unfortunate that my father and my two sister died of the Tsunami disaster that occured in Phuket Thailand, 26th December 2004 and their body are yet to be discovered and my mother narrowly escaped dealth.

My father's business was raised down to nothing. But a deposit of 473.76366,000.000 Thailand baht (11.5 M US$) which is the only document left behind for me and my ill mother at the moment.
